SINGAPORE: Employers are increasingly looking for people with the right mindset and skills. That is the message that an industry-led council promoting lifelong learning in Singapore wants to send out.
Continuing education and training is part of the company's work culture at Micron Semiconductor Asia, both in good and bad economic times.
Jen Kwong Wah, MD, Micron Semiconductor Asia, said: "We should not let downturns worry us and de-focus us because this is part and parcel of the business. If you lose focus on basics like training and skills, then you become uncompetitive, you become a victim of the downturn."
The Workforce Development Agency (WDA) said that with the rapidly-changing economy, more employers want skilled and competent workers.
Mr Bill Chang sits on the WDA's 15-person board. He said: "It is really timely that the message we are sending to people is that skills are really important and also educate them where these skills can be acquired."
Before a continuing education and training programme can be successful, it has to be closely linked to the needs and changes of a particular industry. So the WDA closely consults captains of different industries before finalising the various training and re-training programmes.
WDA is also launching a public education programme with the theme "Learning for Life, Advancing with Skills". - CNA/yb/vm
