SINGAPORE: The visiting Mauritius Prime Minister, Mr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, was hosted to a state dinner at the Istana on Wednesday evening.
Speaking at the dinner, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said even though Mauritius and Singapore are at the opposite ends of the Indian Ocean, both island nations share similarities.
Each country has a multi-ethnic population who arrived as immigrants. Both also had to develop strengths and address vulnerabilities.
Just like Singapore, Mauritius also depends on global free trade and attracting foreign investments.
Mr Lee said Singapore is committed to helping Mauritius with its human resource development.
Under the Singapore Co-operation Programme, 450 Mauritian officials have been trained in areas such as civil aviation, IT and public administration since 1993.
Both countries are also working together on several initiatives under the Singapore Co-operation Enterprise.
As bilateral relations and people-to-people linkages grow, Mr Lee also expressed confidence there will be new areas of cooperation that will bring mutual benefit. - CNA/vm
