SINGAPORE: Over 250 people participated in Singapore's first quadrathlon, which included an inline skating component.
Participants, who ranged from seasoned athletes to budding endurance race enthusiasts, swam 500 metres, skated 12 kilometres, cycled 20 kilometres and ran 6 kilometres, covering a total of 38.5 kilometres at Changi Beach Park on Sunday.
Usually, quadrathlons have a kayaking element. But inline skating was included in the Keppel Offshore & Marine quadrathlon because of its increasing popularity among Singaporeans.
And it certainly proved a challenge for many who were sporting enough to participate despite finding it tough to balance on the wheels.
The champion of the Men's Open category was Pascal Aeschlimann, a 35-year-old from Switzerland.
The winners of the Youth Mixed Relay category were full-time national servicemen, Sim Yan Lian and Benjamin Lan.
The organisers had put in place an extensive safety and medical plan, including jet skis with life sleds to facilitate the quick evacuation of swimmers, roving paramedics on motorbikes, and two fully-equipped ambulances on site. Fortunately, no incidents were reported.
Another sporting first for Singapore on Sunday saw the elderly, aged 50 and above, strutting on the catwalk to promote water sports.
The event was part of the Sembawang Water Carnival, which saw 100 senior citizens participating in water polo, freestyle and breaststroke swimming competitions. The message - that ageing can happen gracefully, healthily and happily.
