SINGAPORE: More people are now aware of the importance of family, according to a survey of 1,200 people that was conducted after the National Family Week celebrations which ended in June 2008.

Three in 10 people surveyed said they now make more effort to give their families top priority in their lives.

The National Family Council (NFC) also found that increased awareness of its activities had an impact on attitudes. As a result, one in four showed more care towards their families.

This year's celebration was the largest in terms of public participation and community support.

More than 260,000 people participated in 350 programmes during the five-week long celebrations. This was a 72 per cent increase in participation.

The council said spreading the message about work-life balance is one of the key areas it is focusing on.

Lim Soon Hock, chairman, National Family Council & National Family Celebrations 2008, said: "Anything to do with the family is like running a marathon. There is no finishing line.

"But having said that, I think that our greatest achievement is creating greater awareness on the importance of family and I would like to think that our message to all Singaporeans that they need to make their family the number one priority in the agenda is getting through.

"We want to strengthen the core family values and we want to strengthen the institution of marriage. Clearly, we want to meet the parenting needs of young families and we want to make family the leadership value, and the last area that we want to look at is really at strengthening the foundation for our teenagers."

"I think all in all, if we can deliver all that, it would have been very successful in helping Singapore build resilient families, making it a great place for families and children." - CNA/vm
