SINGAPORE : The food and beverage (F&B) sector looks set to grow despite the economic slowdown.
To help inexperienced job seekers find jobs in the sector, the North West Community Development Council (CDC) held a job fair on Wednesday, with more than 1,000 jobs up for grabs.
Madam Ong Bee Chiang became a stay-at-home mom 20 years ago to look after her children.
Now, the former personal assistant is ready to re-join the workforce, and is exploring opportunities in the F&B sector.
"I think that the administrative (field) is rather saturated at the moment. I have been looking in the papers and there aren't any jobs available for the kind of experience that I have. So I have to be more open and look for something that is more different," said Madam Ong.
So the North West CDC launched a Trial, Train and Transit scheme to help job seekers, like Madam Ong, who do not have relevant work experience.
Under the scheme, job seekers will undergo a three-day trial to learn about F&B operations and the work environment. If there is a job-fit, the job seeker will be employed and sent for training.
The CDC hopes this will help the job seeker transit and stay employed in the new work place.
"We see opportunities in the F&B industry, because of the (growth in the) whole service industry..., and the IR (integrated resort) coming up. We are seeing this as a growth industry for Singapore," said Dr Teo Ho Pin, mayor of North West CDC.
The CDC will provide financial assistance such as transport allowance and career coaching to support job seekers who make the switch to the F&B industry.
