SINGAPORE: Following concerns by residents in Serangoon Gardens over the setting up of a temporary workers' dormitory at a disused school site, the Ministry of National Development (MND) has accepted a number of suggestions from residents which would be adopted by the dormitory's operator.

Some of these ideas include providing plants to screen the road from the nearest residential developments, locating the pick-up and drop-off points within the premises, and ensuring no mass activities after 10.30pm.

A suggestion by residents for a direct ramp connecting the site to the south-bound Central Expressway (CTE) was, however, turned down for safety reasons.

According to a statement from MND, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) had explained that there is not enough distance for a proper acceleration and deceleration lane at the proposed stretch.

It added that the proposed realignment would also put the safety of pedestrians and cyclists from the dormitory at risk as they would be forced to walk or ride along the expressway.

The ministry said it would continue to work closely with the area's grassroots leaders and adviser on the implementation of the dormitory plan.
