SINGAPORE : The first dormitory for maids is set to open its doors on November 1, but so far, no maid agencies have signed up to house their maids there.

The operator said the dormitory is a new concept, and maid agencies will need time to warm up to it.

Maid agencies find the dormitory's location in Woodlands inconvenient, and the boarding charge of S$25 per maid a day too high.

Refurbished at a cost of S$1 million, the dormitory can house up to 400 maids.

The dormitory operator said it plans to work with healthcare groups to provide basic, one-stop medical services for the domestic workers. - CNA /ls
