Nightclubs geared up for serious business on Halloween

SINGAPORE: Halloween has been serious business for some Singapore nightclubs.

Ancient Celts believed it is the night when the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead blur.

But over the years, it has become an excuse for people to dress up and party.

"I can dress up in a coat and not look stupid," said a party-goer.

In Singapore, one of the biggest events is the Original Halloween Bus Tour, an idea hatched 13 years ago by two restless friends at a party.

“We were having a barbeque on Halloween and we were all dressed up. After the barbeque, we got bored and decided to go club hopping and it proved to be so much fun we decided to do it the following year.

"We rented one bus and we had about 30 people on that bus and then it just grew from one bus to two buses... (and) to seven buses," said Clifford Chua, one of the founders for the Halloween bus tour.

Another founder, John Bosco Lopez, said: "I received bookings since May this year. People were reserving seats, so by September, we were full."

And it was a happy, decked-out lot who then hopped from club to club.

"(I bought my costume from) Houston’s ‘Halloween R' Us’. Forty dollars… (It is) a bargain, including the glasses," said a participant.

But it is not just the costumes that come from afar.

"I just arrived from Munich (on a) 10-and-a-half-hour flight," said one party-goer.

In fact, costumes are all part of the fun and a must-have to get onto the Halloween bus.

Many other clubs have since jumped onto the Halloween bandwagon for a howling good time, to the tune of ringing cash registers.
