SINGAPORE: A dancing soldier has won top honours at the gruelling MediaCorp-Subaru Impreza Challenge 2008.

And it was double joy for 29-year-old George Lee who walked away with a Subaru car, while setting a new endurance record of 81 hours and 32 minutes with his hand placed on a car.

In the final hours of Day Four, it appeared that girl power would reign as three women and a man were still going strong.

And then, it was down to a straight battle of the sexes - between 29-year-old George Lee and 35-year-old Mary Tan.

But just after 11pm in the heart of Singapore's shopping district of Orchard Road, the mother of two conceded.

Ms Tan said: "I lost a lot of concentration."

And that meant sweet victory for the army officer, who was taking part in the challenge for the third year.

Mr Lee said: "From Day One, when I put my hand on the car to the time I get the key - every part of the process I really enjoyed it. There is some kind of satisfaction I find in this challenge that you can't really find elsewhere - the kind of constraints and limitations you put your body through, which is really to the extreme of the extreme."

He wins for himself a Subaru Impreza car, worth some S$80,000.

And after being in the spotlight for so long, he had a rather simple request.

Mr Lee said: "A can of coke, then I will give myself a good shower and then sleep for the next 48 hours."

This was also the first time contestants from around the region took part in the challenge, now in its seventh year.

Organisers plan to expand the competition next year - with more cars and more regional contestants. - CNA/de
