SINGAPORE: The price of eggs imported from Malaysia has risen three times within the past month. And it is expected to continue to increase in the next two months.

The price of one egg imported from Malaysia is now 1.5 cents higher.

That is because Malaysia is also sending its eggs to Hong Kong, after those from China were found to be contaminated.

Prices are expected to rise till the Lunar New Year period if the supply from Malaysia does not increase.

Currently, eggs are priced between S$1.50 and S$2.00 for a carton of ten.

Although egg prices have increased, the number of eggs coming into Singapore from Malaysia remains the same.

Numbering 3 million, the eggs from Malaysia make up 73 per cent of the fresh egg supply in Singapore.

To ensure more sources and competitive pricing, the Egg Import/Export Trading Association said it is in talks with the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority on the possibility of importing eggs from Brazil and Mexico.
