SINGAPORE: The middleman in the illegal kidney-for-sale case started his 14-month jail term on Wednesday afternoon, after the High Court dismissed his appeal against the sentence.

Justice V K Rajah said the 14-month jail term was appropriate and adequate for the offences committed.

44-year-old Wang Chin Sing's lawyer Shashi Nathan said although his client was disappointed, he had accepted the court's decision.

Wang was sentenced to jail in September.

He introduced Indonesian Sulaiman Damanik to local retail magnate Tang Wee Sung for the illegal kidney donation and coached them to lie to the Commissioner of Oaths.

Wang also introduced another Indonesian donor, Toni, to a Juliana Soh for a successful illegal kidney transplant here.

Wang's sentence was the heaviest among those involved in the case.

Tang Wee Sung was sentenced to one day's jail and fined S$17,000 on September 3.

Sulaiman was jailed for three weeks, while Toni served three-and-a-half months and was fined S$2,000. - CNA/vm
