Man's attempt to rob UOB branch at City Plaza foiled

SINGAPORE: A man who allegedly tried to rob a bank last week by posing as a woman, was slapped with a fresh charge in a district court on Wednesday.

Mr Ismail Shaikh Ahmad, 45, is accused of consuming morphine before the attempted robbery at a United Overseas Bank branch at City Plaza on Nov 10.

He had been charged in hospital last week with trying to rob bank teller Ow Soon Hock, 46, by threatening to set off a bomb if Mr Ow did not fill a plastic bag with cash.

The alleged robber was reported to have been dressed in a dark-coloured woman’s Punjabi suit, black gloves and a black headscarf.

He was arrested at the scene after Certis Cisco Lance Corporal Rosli Mohamad Sa’ad and several bank staff wrestled him to the ground and called the police.

Bail was set at S$30,000 and Mr Ismail’s passport was impounded.

The attempted robbery charge carries a jail term of two to seven years and at least six strokes of the cane upon conviction.

If convicted of the drug consumption charge, he faces a maximum 10 years’ imprisonment and/or a fine of up to S$20,000.

The case will be mentioned again on Dec 3.
