SINGAPORE : Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo said while APEC economies are facing a deepening crisis in view of the current global financial situation, APEC had demonstrated in the past that it will only grow stronger and more relevant after each crisis.
He was speaking at a Joint Ministerial Media Conference organised by the Peruvian chair at the close of the 20th APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM) in Lima, Peru.
Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Mr Yeo also met several of his global counterparts separately at the sidelines of the meeting.
With Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, he discussed the impact of the global financial crisis and the regional strategic architecture, especially the importance of deepening the engagement of major powers in the region.
In separate meetings with Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, both sides agreed to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation.
Mr Yeo also called on the co-chair of the AMM, Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde, where he reaffirmed the good bilateral relations between the two countries ahead of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's official visit.
The leaders agreed to explore ways to further strengthen links, in particular, through the recently concluded Singapore-Peru Free Trade Agreement which could provide a good platform to forge closer linkages between the people and private sector from both sides. - CNA /ls
