SINGAPORE: Preparations are underway for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010, starting with the information technology (IT) services.
In August 2010, Singapore will play host to 3,500 athletes competing in 26 sports.
The YOG will be spread over 18 venues, excluding the Games Village at Nanyang Technological University.
But to coordinate and ensure everything runs smoothly, a sound IT system is required.
Helping Singapore organisers to do just that is Atos Origin, which has worked on major Olympic Games.
The technology will cover the organisation of the Games and relaying the results of the competition.
The numbers involved in running the IT platform will be staggering. For example, at the recent Beijing Olympics, up to 10,000 computers and 4,000 personnel were involved in running the IT services.
The Singapore system will be a scaled down version of the Beijing Games.
But the Asian Youth Games next year, which acts as a test bed for the YOG, will not benefit from the new IT system.
"The time frame would not allow that (to) take place and… the Asian Youth Games would have different requirements," said the chairman of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games organising committee, Ng Ser Miang.
Exact requirements for the YOG will be worked out, including the transfer of technology to local partners.
