SINGAPORE: Ten Singapore designs and designers were honoured at this year's President's Design Awards.
It is Singapore's premier award, recognising those who have contributed to the design culture here.
For architects Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell, the most fulfilling projects are those that involve creating spaces which appeal to the public.
Mr Hassell, one of the founding directors of Woha Architects, said: "It's very nice to be part of the life of a city rather than something walled away that only certain people can see."
Another founding director of Woha Architects, Mr Wong, said: "We do want to build for the public and let the public enjoy our buildings."
The duo is one of three recipients of the Designer of the Year award.
The other winners of the Designer of the Year award are Edmund Wee from EPIGRAM and Nathan Yong from Air Division.
But good design should also be functional.
"All our products make a statement. And they are functional, desirable, and more importantly, we call it within the team, humanly-intuitive," said the director of design and innovation at Eubiq, Ng Joo Kok.
Mr Ng and his team is among the seven winners in the Design of the Year category.
Other winners include those from disciplines such as interior, landscape and product designs.
Now into its third year, the awards are aimed at recognising outstanding and iconic Singapore designs that push boundaries and enhance lives.
An exhibition of the winning works will be held at the URA centre.
The exhibition will run from December 3 to February 28, 2009.
