SINGAPORE: A check by the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) found that five of the standard “916” gold pieces from 30 retailers did not contain the minimum 91.6 per cent of gold.

CASE bought the jewellery from retailers across Singapore.

It was then tested by an independent body, the Singapore Assay Office.

Three of the five retailers are members of the Jewellers Association, which said investigations will have to be carried out by its disciplinary sub-committee.

Eight retailers also charged more than what it should cost based on the weight and price at point of purchase.

Ho Nai Chuen president, Singapore Jewellers Association, said: "We have to examine to see whether these are isolated cases, whereby maybe certain pieces, just occasionally happen and it's not intentional. So I have to take it that before full examination, or full investigation, we cannot conclude that these three are unscrupulous jewellers." - CNA/vm
