SINGAPORE: Modern Beauty Salon group and its former director Joyce Tsang Yue have been charged with tax evasion.

Four of its companies - Modern Beauty Salon Co., Modern Beauty Salon (South Bridge), Modern Fitness (T.P.) Co. and Modern Elite Salon Co. - face a total of seven charges for omitting to declare about S$3 million worth of income between 1998 and 2001.

The total amount of tax involved was over S$760,000.

Tsang is accused of assisting the four companies to commit those seven offences. She is currently in Hong Kong and was unable to appear in court on medical grounds.

The combined tax penalties faced by Tsang and the companies amount to over S$4.5 million.

The case will be mentioned again on January 13 next year.

In a separate case, two food court partners were charged with six counts of tax evasion each.

Ang Boon Chye and Wong Kee Yock, who have stakes in the All Family Food Court, had each under-declared a total of S$536,534 in profits between 2000 and 2005.

In some instances, they had even declared making a loss when they had actually turned in a profit.

Both are out on a S$10,000 bail each and their passports have been impounded. Their case has been adjourned to 16 January 2009. - CNA/vm
