SINGAPORE: Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers have uncovered the largest haul of contraband cigarettes for this year.

The potential customs duty and GST payable for the 8,110 cartons amounted to some S$620,000.

The discovery was made on Tuesday, December 23, at about 1pm when a Malaysia-registered lorry, driven by a Malaysian, arrived at the cargo complex of Woodlands Checkpoint.

ICA said the duty-unpaid cigarettes were hidden within a consignment that was declared as mixed hardwood sawn timber.

The case has been referred to the Singapore Customs for further investigations.
