All small buses to install seat belts within 5 years

SINGAPORE : One week before school re-opens, some operators of small school buses have been busy getting their vehicles retrofitted with safety belts to meet new Land Transport Authority regulations.

At least 43 small school buses from 12 schools are involved in the pilot phase.

And it is not just seat belts that are necessary.

Booster seats are needed as well if the buses are ferrying 3 to 8 year olds.

One distributor said he has sold about 200 only so far.

Bus operators said they are in no rush to do the conversion as they still have to pay part of the cost first.

Others said they may switch to big buses, which are not subject to the new rules. - CNA/ms
