SINGAPORE: Malaysian police have arrested a Singaporean man suspected of abusing his eight-year-old stepson and causing his death.

A Bernama news agency report said the man is in remand until January 3 to help in investigations.

The report said the police found the boy's body on a bed in the backroom of an apartment unit in the Tampoi district of Johor Bahru on Sunday.

The boy was said to have injury marks all over his body.

The victim had lived with his stepfather as well as his 32-year-old mother and six-month-old sister.

Responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia, Singapore's Foreign Affairs Ministry said neither it nor its High Commission in Kuala Lumpur have been informed of the arrest.

It added that it is checking with local authorities on the matter.
