SINGAPORE: Singapore is hosting the Volvo Ocean Race this month and preparations are in full steam.

And while the sailors are taking some time off their training schedule, their children are hitting the books in a travelling school.

Rooms at Sentosa Cove were converted into temporary classrooms for 30 children whose fathers are participating in the race.

The children, aged between four and 13 years, enjoyed an outdoor lesson on Friday with students from St Hilda's Primary School's sailing team.

Dana Koh, a St Hilda's Primary School student, said: "I feel excited that we get to see the students from Volvo Ocean Race. Also, it is the first day at school and we get to skip it and go for this excursion."

The students from the Volvo Ocean Race School attend school back home and while they are on the move, the race school will come up with a special curriculum.

Bryony Kent, head teacher, Volvo Ocean Race School, said: "We provide a programme... which is based on the country we are in. So in Singapore, we have been studying so many different religions as you've got such a diverse culture here."

In fact, the race school allows the children to foster a common bond despite their different backgrounds.

Tory Read, student, Volvo Ocean Race School, said: "It is different, but also very fun to get to know what they are like, where all of them live, and their language."

The children and their teachers will be leaving for Qingdao, China in two weeks for the next leg of the race. - CNA/vm
