SINGAPORE: Bodies of two Singaporeans killed in the New Year's nightclub fire in Bangkok were brought back to Singapore late Tuesday night by family members.
26-year-old Lu Weiye had been studying at the Thai capital since June. He and his mother were close and would talk often on the phone.
Madam Loh sent him an SMS shortly after midnight on New Year's Day wishing him a happy new year. But she never received a response.
Lu Weiye was one of three Singaporeans who died in the Santika blaze. His mother said he had originally planned to come home to spend the Lunar New Year holidays with her.
She said: "Weiye's friends and the counsellor advised me not to go collect his body because it was so badly burnt. But as his mother, I have to tell him personally, ‘I am here to take you back to Singapore.’"
Another Singaporean, 40-year-old Leslie Yeo, also died in the fire. His family declined to comment, requesting to grieve in private.
There was finally some closure for family and friends of Teo Sze Siong. The 38-year-old air traffic controller was one of the first victims identified.
On Wednesday morning, his body was finally laid to rest at the Mandai Crematorium. He leaves behind his mother and wife. - CNA/vm
