SINGAPORE: Singapore Ironman and ultra marathon runner Lim Nghee Huat is set to run 217 kilometres non-stop in Brazil on January 23.
In the spirit of the race, the Singapore Table Tennis Association will give out pledge cards at a dinner next week, where guests can donate to the association for every kilometre that he runs.
In 2007, the 55-year-old journalist from MediaCorp's Chinese Current Affairs division conquered the world's hottest and driest place – Death Valley in California. Now, Mr Lim is ready to take over Brazil in a non-stop 217-kilometre race.
To ensure that he finishes the challenge in 45 hours, his training regime for the race is definitely not meant for the faint-hearted.
"217 km is equivalent to more than five marathons. You need to have enough training mileage, so I have been doing something like 45 km to 80 km every weekend since October," he said.
Mr Lim is dedicating his run to the recent achievements of the Singapore table tennis team.
He said: "In the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, they won the silver medal in the team event. As a Singaporean, this is my way of showing appreciation to the Singapore table tennis team."
Mr Lim leaves for Brazil on January 16 to acclimatise himself before the race.
