Singapore Budget 2009

SINGAPORE : Taxi drivers in Singapore will soon be getting some extra money in their pockets.

Taxi companies said they will pass on a 30 per cent government road tax rebate - announced during the Budget - to their drivers.

This works out to about S$306 a year for each taxi.

The rebate will kick in from July.

But ComfortDelGro - which has a fleet of over 15,000 - said it will start payouts earlier, in March.

It will also give out the money in cash over a shorter period.

So instead of a S$25.50 monthly payment over 12 months, it will give out S$51 each month over six months.

SMRT will also pass on the cost savings in full, but said it has not decided how this will be done.

Smart Cabs said it will credit the money to its drivers' Medisave accounts from July. - CNA/ms
