SINGAPORE : Professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) affected by the downturn and looking for a career switch to the retail sector will soon have a training programme to help them.
It will be set up by the Workforce Development Agency as part of a series of Professional Conversion Programmes (PCP) where fees are subsidised by the government.
Visiting the Singapore Institute of Retail Studies, which will conduct the programme, Acting Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong said Singapore's retail sector is growing despite the downturn.
He said 4,000 vacancies are expected in the sector at the frontline, supervisory and managerial levels when new malls are completed.
Details of the programme will be released in late February.
The minister said it will have on-the-job training to help students become familiarised with the industry.
Mr Gan said: "It is important for workers to have flexible mindsets to be prepared to switch jobs, and even switch to different industries. For example, workers in the manufacturing sector may have to consider switching to the service sector in a new career.
"When the economy recovers, I hope that these workers who have switched to their careers may find new opportunities in the new careers they have chosen, so many of them may decide to stay on in the service industry, because every industry has its unique opportunities and potential to grow." - CNA/ms
