SINGAPORE: Some 1,100 people have been recruited to work in the public healthcare sector since the start of 2009, and the Health Ministry says it still has another 2,600 job vacancies to be filled immediately.

All these are part of the ministry's commitment to create 4,500 jobs in the next two years.

Of the 1,100 jobs taken up so far, the ministry says 60 per cent or 660 jobs were filled by Singapore citizens.

And among the Singaporeans hired, 27 per cent (or 170) were above 40 years old.

Of the 2,600 vacancies, the ministry says one third are for nurses, another third for medical and allied health professionals, and the rest for administrative and support positions.

The ministry is also helping Singaporeans to make mid-career switch by funding some 250 training places under its Healthcare Mid-Career Conversion Programme. So far, 93 of the training places have been filled.

Training places are still available for those interested in becoming healthcare assistants and pharmacy technicians.
