SINGAPORE: The Singapore Silat Federation has come up with a novel way to promote the Malay art of self-defence and take it beyond its usual sporting base.
It has launched a "Silat A-Bility" programme aimed at disabled students.
The students from the Metta School, participants of the programme, are proof that their disabilities do not hinder them from mastering a new skill.
The Singapore Disability Sports Council plans to link up the Singapore Silat Federation with other schools to take this programme to more disabled students.
The sport not only promotes a healthy lifestyle but has other advantages too.
The vice-principal of Metta School, Anuwar Abdul Wahab, said: "Importantly, they (the disabled students) have increased self-confidence and self-esteem, so much that it changes their life perspective, that they are able to achieve something in the future."
