SINGAPORE : Singapore's Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, said that in the recent electoral changes announced in Parliament, tweaks were made to ensure long-term stability of a government that will serve Singapore well.
Speaking to reporters in Seoul where he attended the ASEAN-Korea summit, Mr Lee said the next step is to legislate the changes in time for the upcoming polls.
On comments that more should have been done to downsize the Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs), Mr Lee said the test is not in the popularity of the system.
He said: "For the voters, (it's) whether the scheme works well, whether it generates the right incentive for the voters, so that they vote for people that serves them well. On the candidates, (it's for them) to do their best to look after the interest of their voters."
As for the parties, the prime minister said the electoral changes were made so that they field good candidates.
Mr Lee had said in Parliament last week that mega-GRCs will be cut from six to an average of a five-member team.
GRCs will remain to ensure minority representation in Parliament. But some observers have said GRCs should be made up of just a team of three people. - CNA /ls
