SINGAPORE: Singapore's flu alert level will remain at yellow despite the World Health Organisation's (WHO's) announcement of a global H1N1 flu pandemic.

However, the Health Ministry said Singapore will gradually shift its strategy from stopping the spread of virus to caring for those who fall ill.

It added that with a level six pandemic, the shift to mitigation measures may be inevitable. H1N1 flu cases have so far been reported in 74 countries and it may be a matter of time before there is community spread in Singapore.

The ministry also said specific travel advisories may become increasingly impractical. Instead, it is encouraging Singaporeans to keep updated on developments of the country they are planning to visit by referring to its website, and taking note of the total number of cases reported, the number of deaths and export cases from these countries.

Singaporeans are also advised to take the following precautionary measures: Pay attention to announcements from the local government and follow local public health guidelines, including any movement restrictions and prevention recommendations.

Other advices include maintaining high standards of personal hygiene at all times and to avoid crowded areas and contact with anyone who appears unwell.
