SINGAPORE : The new two-storey Geylang Serai Market is set to open its doors to the public on July 13.
With high ceilings, wider stalls and more seats, the new building adds a Malay touch to the modern purpose-built market.
The S$18.2 million market with 365 stalls took almost three years to complete - mainly because of the many changes made to the initial design, one of which is the addition of another deck of parking lots at the multi-storey car park situated at the back of the market.
The building has a new pedestrian overhead bridge link to the nearby Joo Chiat complex and a heritage corner where the history of the 42-year-old market is showcased.
Dr Ong Seh Hong, MP for Marine Parade GRC said: "I'm very impressed with the market. First of all, the architecture is very nice, in keeping to what we wanted to preserve - the Malayness of this area. Secondly, this being a purpose-built market, is very spacious.
"With very high ceilings, it will provide very good ventilation... Despite some changes in the design, the market is still built within the budget allocated which is $18.2 million." - CNA /ls
