SINGAPORE: Thailand's former Permanent Secretary for Defence, General Winai Phattiyakul, was conferred Singapore's highest military award by President SR Nathan at the Istana on Tuesday.
The Distinguished Service Order, Military, was given to General Winai to recognise his contributions in enhancing defence ties between Singapore and Thailand.
A Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) statement said General Winai has helped to strengthen the bond between the Singapore Armed Forces and the Royal Thai Armed Forces.
SAF troops had served under General Winai's command during his tour of duty as Force Commander of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor from 2001 to 2002, and had benefited from it.
MINDEF also said he played a key role in guiding the development of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting.
General Winai is in Singapore on a three-day visit, from June 21 to 23.
He called on Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean, and Permanent Secretary for Defence Chiang Chie Foo on Tuesday morning.
