SINGAPORE: On the last scheduled day of the David Widjaja coroner inquiry, his family sprung a surprise by submitting a letter to the State Coroner seeking an adjournment, permission to call another seven witnesses and a change in counsel.

They asked for their current lawyer Shashi Nathan to be replaced by popular criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan.

Mr Nathan said he was not aware of the new development.

Mr Anandan said he would not be able to take on the case unless proceedings were adjourned to give him time to prepare.

The family's request was rejected by the State Coroner Victor Yeo, who gave them two options – stick with their current lawyer or proceed without any counsel.

The family chose to proceed with Mr Nathan for the rest of the session, and later apologised to him for submitting the letter without his knowledge.

They also said they would decide whether to continue with Mr Nathan's services for next week.

The State Coroner is expected to deliver his verdict on July 29.
