SINGAPORE: Six people will spend 24 hours in plastic cubicles in central Singapore to try to save the earth. It is all part of MediaCorp's Gaia Life Challenge, which is back for the second year, to find Singapore's most eco-friendly pair. this time.

The inaugural version in 2008 was an individual challenge.

Contestants had to get down and dirty and then go online to blog about it, and live with just the bare essentials for an entire day in a plastic room.

MediaCorp's Gaia Life Challenge is about spreading the green message of saving energy, recycling and reducing waste.

The six contestants will have to spend the night in plastic cubicles. But they do get to come out from time to time to play some challenges. And the team that gets the highest score out of 12 challenges wins.

Their energy consumption in the room will also count towards their final score.

Lucas Chow, CEO, MediaCorp, said: "The winner from this challenge will become our ambassador for the next one year. There will be other follow up programmes to engage the ambassador so the message will continue. I don't think that saving mother earth is a one-day, one-event thing. It has to be an ongoing thing."

Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Environment & Water Resources Ministry, said: "We hope that more companies will follow in MediaCorp's footsteps in spreading the environmental message - because we really need to repeat the environmental message in order to get everyone to come on board and make green habits and lifestyle second nature to them."

The message seems to have reached those who have chosen to pay a little more for energy-efficient electrical appliances.

Evonne Lee, marketing manager, Gain City Best-electric, said: "For 2008, versus 2009, the sales of invertor air conditioners has actually gone up more than 50 per cent. Customers actually chose invertor air-cons over non-invertor aircons because there's long-term savings that comes along with it."

The winners of Gaia Life Challenge will be announced on Sunday.
