SINGAPORE: The National University of Singapore (NUS) kicked off its commencement ceremonies on Monday, with a sombre reminder to graduates that their job prospects may be more limited.

They were urged to use the skills they have acquired to make full use of their opportunities.

Addressing new graduates, NUS president Professor Tan Chorh Chuan noted that for the graduating class of 2009, the immediate future may appear fraught with difficulty.

He said with the economic crisis, job opportunities may be more limited and prospects for advancement may seem slower than before. However, there is opportunity to grow in adversity.

Optimistic that the hard times will pass, Professor Tan said as Singapore and the rest of the world recover, many exciting new possibilities will spring up.

He believes the NUS graduates are equipped with strong mental and personal skills, and will be able to look to the future with optimism.

A total of 8,810 graduates will receive their degrees this year.

Graduand Liyana Mohd Khafiz said: "(The job market is)... kind of tough, but I am optimistic and I am very interested in joining the civil service. Hopefully, there will be opportunities for me there, as a political science graduate."

This year is particularly significant for NUS as it also marks the 80th anniversary of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Science.
