SINGAPORE : Stallholders have started moving into the newly-revamped Geylang Serai market, which is progressively reopening from Monday.

While many eager customers turned up, few stalls were actually open for business.

Sixty per cent of the stalls on level one were closed and only 10 per cent of the cooked food stalls on level two were open.

Most of the market's 365 stalls are expected to be fully open by Friday.

An area has also been set aside for the Geylang Serai Indian Rojak stall. But it remains closed for now, pending the outcome of the coroner's inquiry into the deaths of two customers who ate there, while the stall was at its previous temporary location.

When asked about conditions in the new market, most stallholders were generally pleased with the more spacious dining area which has seen seating capacity doubled.

The new Geylang Serai market has lifts and facilities for the handicapped, features which were not available before the 40-month long renovation. - CNA/ms
