SINGAPORE: A 15-year vision was realised on Friday at the ASEAN Summit in Hua Hin, when the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) was launched.

The new body aims to further develop cooperation and protect human rights in the region.

ASEAN leaders pledged US$200,000 to start a fund to support activities of the commission during its first year of operation.

This will be topped up later by annual contributions from member states as well as from external sources.

The commission's Terms of Reference would also be reviewed every five years, to further develop and strengthen its mandate.

The setting up of the commission is provided for in Article 14 of the ASEAN Charter.

Singapore's representative on the commission is retired Senior District Judge Richard Magnus.
