KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has offered to help Indonesia curb the haze menace, which has affected the southern states of Johor and Malacca.
Some 200 schools in the Ledang and Muar districts were closed, while governemnt clinics also recorded over a 100% jump in patients seeking treatment for respiratory illnesses.
In an exclusive interview with Channel NewsAsia, Malaysia Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said Kuala Lumpur is willing to help Jakarta put out the fires. "For years we have been almost free of haze so we take it for granted, we forgot that it's a perennial problem, it's happened before...maybe we relaxed, I think we should make this an agenda. [During] the joint commission meeting, this is an agenda we need to discuss, this is an agenda we need to cooperate. This is not just a problem for Indonesia but for Malaysia too," he said.
His ministry will also work closely with the Environment Ministry to come up with some proposals, which will be conveyed to Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.
