More than 100 Filipino artists launch exhibit on Philippine history

MANILA : Over 100 Filipino visual artists have come together to stage an exhibit of their interpretations of Philippine history.

"This is an effort to communicate that history is (never-ending)... Without the knowledge of history, one will never be informed as to how to make reforms," said Karen Flores, artist, TutoK Kasaysayan (History in Focus).

From the pre-colonial times and the struggles for independence during the Spanish and American occupation, to martial law and the return to democracy, each artwork that are exhibited tackles relevant issues from the past.

"My main objective as curator is to help Filipinos understand the importance of history, which can help us make sense of our present condition," said Noel Cuizon, artist and curator for TutoK Kasaysayan (History in Focus).

The visual artists hope that through their artworks, more Filipinos will be able to rediscover their past and become actively involved in shaping the nation's future.

For instance, the oil painting by artist Emmanuel Garibay, titled "On the Brink", is about the growing number of Filipinos working overseas.

"The main objective of most Filipinos would be to land a job abroad. I find it very abnormal and perverse, and that leads to a lot of social problems that all boils down to the fact that the bonds keeping this society together is too weak. Basically, it's a metaphor for us as a nation," said Garibay, artist, TutoK Kasaysayan (History in Focus).

The artists hope to generate enough funding for future exhibitions on socio-political issues. - CNA /ls
