Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has congratulated Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi on the Barisan Nasional's election victory and formation of a new government.

In his letter, Prime Minister Lee also reaffirmed Singapore's commitment to working with Prime Minister Abdullah to deepen the good bilateral relationship as well as for regional stability and prosperity.

Prime Minister Abdullah's multi-racial National Front (Barisan Nasional) coalition won a simple majority in parliament in the March 8 general elections.

This was the weakest win by the Malaysian ruling coaltion and has prompted some to call for Prime Minister Badawi to step down.

Shrugging off the criticisms Mr Badawi was sworn into office earlier on Monday surrounded by cabinet members and government officials.

Commenting on the election where the Barisan coalition ended up with 62 percent of federal seats, down from 90 percent, Singapore's foreign minister said the setback is not likely to affect ties with the city-state.

"What BN has been able to achieve is still a solid majority ... I don't think it will affect political stability there and it should not affect bilateral relations," Foreign Minister George Yeo said in remarks broadcast by radio station 938 Live.

"Our bilateral relations are very good and getting better and I see no reason why it should not get better after the elections," he said.

Mr Yeo said he expected the two neighbours to continue working together in areas of common interest such as the Iskandar Development Region (IDR) business hub project in Malaysia's southern Johor state. AFP-CNA/sf
