KUALA LUMPUR: Amid tight security, the Malaysian leg of the Olympic torch relay ended relatively incident-free on Monday, despite a heavy downpour.
It was a sea of red at the landmark Independence Square – the launch site of the Malaysian leg of the Olympic relay.
Joining thousands of Malaysians to welcome the arrival of the torch were hundreds of Chinese nationals, mostly students studying in the Malaysian capital.
The relay started just after 2pm under heavy security, with over 1,000 police officers on duty to make sure the run was not disrupted.
Running alongside 80 torchbearers in the 16.5km relay were members of a special action squad that was tasked to protect the country's VIPs.
Earlier in the day, a Japanese family of three got themselves in trouble when they waved a Tibetan flag at the celebrations. The family was reportedly hit by a Chinese national who was angered by their action.
During the final stretch of the run, it began to pour as the torchbearers made their way to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. But despite the heavy rain and thunderstorm, the relay ended at exactly 6pm.
Some Chinese nationals have crossed the Causeway to immerse themselves in the spirit of the Olympics.
One said: "Even though I can't be back in China, I hope everyone back home will work together to make sure the Olympic Games is a success."
"The purpose of the Games is really to celebrate peace and harmony. I am very proud," another added.
After the closing ceremony, the Olympic flame left Kuala Lumpur for its next stop – Jakarta.
