SINGAPORE: The US Ambassador for ASEAN Affairs said diplomacy remains the only option to engage Myanmar to urge its military government to allow foreign assistance into the country.

Mr Scot Marciel said this during a brief stopover in Singapore.

  • Fast Facts

He urged ASEAN and the international community to continue to have a dialogue with Myanmar to move forward.

Mr Marciel added that Washington is committed to working with the military, to bring in relief supplies into Myanmar and offer support.

The ambassador reiterated that the US has no intention of intervening, without the approval of the Myanmar government.

Mr Marciel said: “We're working with the Burmese authorities and hoping that we can get their approval to bring in assistance. All of us share the same goal of trying to get help to the people who need it. And my impression is that the ASEAN countries have been trying to get assistance in directly, and also talking to officials in Myanmar to grant access. We think it's been positive.

“I wouldn't call on ASEAN to do anything more than to continue what it’s been doing, which has been very helpful. We're all committed to trying to work with the authorities in Myanmar, because in the end they would have to agree to grant access either for experts or assistance. That's the way this has to work." - CNA/vm
