ASEAN, UN call on international community to help victims of Cyclone Nargis

SINGAPORE: The United Nations and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have called on the international community to rise to the occasion to help the people of Myanmar.

They will hold the ASEAN-UN International Pledging Conference in Yangon on 25 May.

    Singapore, which is the current chair of the 10-member ASEAN, issued a joint statement on Tuesday.

    Member states of the UN are invited to participate in the conference at the ministerial level.

    It will focus on the needs of those affected by Cyclone Nargis and seek international support and financial help to meet the country's most urgent challenges, and also longer term recovery efforts.

    The two groupings called on the rest of the world to translate their solidarity and sympathy into "concrete commitments" to help the Myanmar people rebuild their lives. - CNA/vm
