BANGKOK: The UN flash appeal for victims of Cyclone Nargis is 63 percent funded, said the United Nations.
However, it added that a joint group of UN, ASEAN and Myanmar government officials will issue a thorough assessment by June 15 to pave the way for a fresh call for funds.
Almost a month after the cyclone struck, UNICEF officials stressed the importance of children attending school. They said it would give them a sense of normalcy as well as continue their education.
Relief activities, recently ramped up with the government allowing more aid workers to enter the Delta region, will go on for at least six more months.
UN officials said continued efforts will need to include long-term aid for farmers and fishermen who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
Terje Skavdal, UN Office of Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said: "We do not endorse premature return to areas where there are no services. People need to be assisted in their settlements and satisfactory conditions need to be created before they can return to their place of origin.
"Any force or coerced movement of people is completely unacceptable. This point has been made very clear to the authorities. And the UN will continue to watch the situation closely." - CNA/vm
