KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has dismissed the Opposition's new deadline to form the federal government by early
December as "nonsense" and "a waste of time".
He said he could not see any reason why members of the ruling Barisan Nasional(BN) would want to leave the coalition and join the opposition Pakatan Rakyat.
"We form a strong government and we will continue to do whatever we can to
develop the country. This is the chance for the party, so why would anyone want
to leave the party?" said Mr Abdullah.
The Malaysian leader has been under heavy pressure to quit after the coalition's poor showing at the 2008 General Elections at the hands of the opposition led by Anwar Ibrahim, who has been threatening to seize power.
Speaking after delivering a keynote address at a regional forum in the Malaysian capital, Mr Abdullah said "Barisan Nasional is the winner in the last general election and we have jobs to do."
"We may have differences among ourselves and some are not easily resolved but the fact is that we have been given the trust by the people."
Anwar Ibrahim who claims that he is set to topple the Malaysian government had initially set a September 16 deadline for a change in government to take place.
After failing to meet his self-imposed September deadline, Anwar set December 8
as the new date, claiming that he had enough defectors from the ruling coaltion to form a new administration.
"It's all nonsense" said Mr Abdullah. "But he keeps doing it because that's the only way to create an interest. I think you are wasting your time," said Abdullah when asked about the December deadline.
