MANILA: There has been an outpouring of prayers and support from Filipinos for their former president, Corazon Aquino, who is hospitalised with cancer.

The 76-year-old has refused further treatment and her family said they are leaving her fate to God.

Prayers continue to pour in for Cory Aquino, who has been confined in the hospital for weeks due to colon cancer.

A mass is being held at the Sto Nino De Paz Chapel within the Central Business District, where Filipinos from all walks of life have gathered to pray for the health of the country's democratic icon.

Vice President Noli De Castro, said: "I believe that prayers are most potent. Prayers are the most powerful force in the world. I believe that through our prayers, the former president will be able to recover soon."

Brother Mike Velarde, said: "She offered her life after the assassination of her husband Ninoy and she has served the Filipinos very well even after her presidency. We need more Cory Aquino.

Bishop Teodoro Bacani, said: "You know, the Lord says that all things are possible to him who believes. So if we really pray in faith, miracles can happen and I believe a miracle can happen to Tita Cory."

Cory Aquino herself acknowledges that the peaceful revolt in 1986 would not have been possible if not for the strong faith of the Filipino people.

Now Filipinos are hoping that their prayers would once again create a miracle for the former president's health. - CNA/vm
