SINGAPORE: The Ramadan bazaar at Geylang Serai – usually known as the best place to shop during the Muslim holy month – is seeing a smaller crowd this year.

Stallholders said on Saturday that the number of people visiting the bazaar this year has fallen by about 30 per cent. They blamed it on the economic downturn as people are less willing to spend.

The number of stalls participating this year has taken a hit as well. Organisers said the take-up rate is only 80 per cent of last year's figure.

Lowering rental fees from S$5,000 to S$3,500 did not help to attract more vendors.
