SINGAPORE: Singapore said Tuesday visitor arrivals fell at a slower pace in July due partly to attractive holiday packages and promotions as the sector tries to recover from the global economic downturn.
The number of travellers arriving in the city-state dropped an annual 4.5 per cent to 881,000, its smallest decline in 2009, the Singapore Tourism Board said in a statement.
Arrivals from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Vietnam saw a double-digit increase of between 11.2 per cent and 18.2 per cent, which partly helped negate declines from other key markets including China, South Korea and Japan, the statement said.
Singapore has said it expects to receive about 9.0-9.5 million travellers this year, generating an expected S$12.0 billion to S$12.5 billion in revenue.
It received 10.1 million visitors last year, missing its target of 10.8 million as travel slowed in the second half due to the global slump.
