SINGAPORE - Visitor arrivals to Singapore fell at a slower pace in July, partly due to attractive holiday packages and promotions as the tourism sector tries to recover from the global economic downturn.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said the number of visitors arriving in the city-state dropped 4.5 per cent to 881,000 in July, its smallest year-on-year decline this year.

Arrivals from key markets - Hong Kong, Malaysia and Vietnam - registered double-digit growth of between 11.2 and 18.2 per cent in July, mainly due to promotions accompanying the Great Singapore Sale and value holiday packages by airlines, STB said in a statement.

These partly helped negate declines from other key markets, including Japan, South Korea and China, which STB said were not as steep as in recent months.

Singapore's top five visitor-generating markets in July were Indonesia (169,000), Australia (79,000), China (72,000), India (66,000) and Malaysia (54,000).

Visitor days were estimated at 4.6 million days, a drop of 11.6 per cent compared with July 2008.

The average occupancy rate for hotels was 80 per cent in July, down 4.5 per cent from a year ago. Hotel room revenue fell 29.7 per cent on-year to S$127 million, as average room rate dropped 25.3 per cent to S$177.

Singapore has said it expects to receive about 9.0-9.5 million visitors this year, generating an expected S$12.0-12.5 billion in revenue.

Last year, it received 10.1 million visitors, missing its target of 10.8 million as travel slowed in the second half of the year due to the global downturn.
