SINGAPORE: Four members of the public were commended by the police on Tuesday for helping to foil a robbery.
75-year-old Lim Chwee Hong was offering some prayers Tuesday morning at the void deck of Block 120 Bukit Merah View, when a 33-year-old Indian man grabbed her neck from behind and ran away with her purse.
Madam Lim chased after the man and shouted for help, attracting the attention of four members of the public who were nearby.
They ran after the suspect and caught him near Lower Delta Road. The suspect was later arrested by the police. The victim's purse, which contained some S$400, was successfully recovered.
The four men received the Public Spiritedness Award for their selfless acts of courage. The four are 51-year-old Lee Kim Choon, 56-year-old Hoong Kah Kuan and two CISCO officers, 37-year-old Mazelan and 19-year-old Aqilan.
Mr Lee said: "I could sense something was wrong and I quickly gave chase. While running, I saw these two gentlemen on the side of the road, and I shouted at them to chase the robber...
"We finally got hold of him (the robber) and pinned him down. While all this was happening I took out my handphone and dialed 999."
