SINGAPORE: This year's Hari Raya Charity Fund has received some S$24,000 so far.
The annual event is held a week before the fasting month and continues through to the week after Hari Raya.
Organisers aim to collect some S$1.2 million for the fund. The money will be used for the elderly, single parents and families needing financial help during the festive season.
The number of applicants for financial help has doubled to some 6,000 this year.
However, organisers said the fund will only be able to provide for 4,200 applicants.
The community is also working with mosques to ensure that the distribution of porridge during the fasting month is unaffected, despite the economic downturn.
